shawnigan-historyThe Shawnigan Residents Association (SRA) began years ago as a group of waterfront owners concerned about the environment of the lake. Later, it was revived when TimberWest threatened to impose foreshore leases on the waterfront users. The success of the original organization demonstrated the need for a group to represent matters of concern to the whole community, not just lake front owners.

The mission statement of the SRA is "to actively represent community and member interests in matters of the environment, governance and development practices that support our vision for the future of Shawnigan Lake". In addressing these concerns it has evolved into a community-wide organization, meeting with elected representatives, government officials, developers, and local residents. Although it is not opposed to development in the area, it shares the concern of all residents that any development, logging, or mining activity, etc. should not impact negatively on the community or its environment.

The SRA was instrumental in promoting the study into the merits of incorporation, completed in 2009. While the study has expanded to include Mill Bay and Cobble Hill the SRA remains committed to promoting Shawnigan Community interests and its unique watershed and environmental issues.
