Notice: SHAWNIGAN LAKE, COBBLE HILL & MILL BAY

There is a local controversy taking place with regards to the importation, dumping and processing of contaminated waste into the Shawnigan Watershed. This will affect the water that residents drink and use for recreational purposes. Please inform yourself and ask questions at the following meetings.

MAY 23rd/12
CVRD 175 Ingram St, Duncan at 6pm
&
MAY 31/12
Shawnigan Lake Communtity Center at 6pm

With regards to the above concern, Area Director Bruce Fraser posted the following:

"As a result of our recent CVRD delegation to the Minister of Environment the ministry will be sending MOE staff to the Regional Services Committee meeting to discuss how to make progress on the growing issue of soil dumping in the southern reaches of the Shawnigan Watershed.

The Regional District has been complaining to government for 12 years without making headway until the last few weeks. The Board is taking a collaborative, problem solving approach to this matter in the hopes of gaining enough influence to make changes even though jurisdiction lies with provincial ministries. Board members will be asking hard questions of the Ministry representatives, including the status of the SIA application and their current approach to that application.” If you have questions in advance of either meeting please feel free to contact me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
